Happy Wheels System Requirements

Steam minimums for Windows and Linux, why HD 4000 and WebGL matter, and why macOS is missing.

System Requirements

Fancy Force published minimum specs for the Happy Wheels Steam edition (app 4705510), scheduled for 21 September 2026. Those numbers are the only official PC box we have. The free HTML5 game on Totaljerkface does not ship a matching chart; it often runs on weaker machines because it is a browser tab, but that is observation, not a promise. Steam is not out yet, so treat the table as a store listing. For date, ads, and accounts see Steam launch. For which client to use see Steam vs browser. Pads are on controller setup. Browser patch context is on the changelog.

Happy Wheels is single-player. Specs below are for one local client, not for hosting a session.

Official Steam minimums (Windows and Linux)

The store lists the same shape on both desktop platforms:

AreaMinimum
CPUIntel Core i3 / AMD equivalent, 2.0 GHz
RAM4096 MB
GPUGPU with WebGL / DirectX 11 (Intel HD 4000 or better)
Storage1024 MB
Windows extraDirectX 11
Windows OSWindows 10 64-bit
Linux OSglibc 2.31 / Ubuntu 20.04

There is no recommended spec on the store copy we are tracking. If your machine is far above this table, you still will not get a ray-traced ragdoll. Happy Wheels is a 2D physics toy. Headroom helps huge user levels and the editor, not cinematic presets.

macOS is not listed. There is no Steam Mac SKU on the app page. Boot Camp, a spare Windows partition, or the browser on Safari/Chrome is the Mac conversation — and the browser is still the only full client you can run today.

Steam Deck: Playable. Not Verified. Playable means the game is expected to run, possibly with community layout work or extra steps. It is not a handheld quality badge. Bring the controller setup notes with you; Deck users still meet the same CPU/GPU/RAM idea inside a custom AMD APU that is well above HD 4000.

What “Intel HD 4000 or better” actually means

Intel HD 4000 is the iGPU in many Ivy Bridge laptops from the early 2010s. Steam uses it as the floor for WebGL / DirectX 11 class hardware. Translation:

  • If your GPU can run DirectX 11 on Windows, you are in the named envelope.
  • If your GPU can run WebGL in a desktop browser (not a broken software rasterizer), you are in the same envelope for the HTML5 client.
  • Integrated graphics newer than HD 4000 (HD 4400, UHD 620, Vega, Apple is irrelevant here, Ryzen 2000 G-series and up) are above the floor.
  • A machine that cannot open a WebGL demo in Chrome is below the floor even if the CPU is an i7.

v1.98.1 (16 June 2026) fixed a crash without WebGL2. That is a browser note on the changelog, but it is the reason this page cares about WebGL versions. Steam’s table says WebGL / DirectX 11, not “must have WebGL2”. If an old iGPU exposes WebGL 1 only, test the browser build first. Community reports say Steam may wrap that same JavaScript in Chromium; a GPU that already fails the tab is a bad Steam bet.

Windows lists DirectX 11 twice in spirit: once as the GPU capability, once as a Windows requirement. Install the DirectX 11 runtime if a fresh Windows 10 box complains. Linux does not list DirectX; the GPU still needs a driver stack that can present WebGL inside whatever Chromium shell Steam uses.

RAM, CPU, and the 1 GB disk line

4096 MB RAM is the floor for both Windows and Linux. Browsers eat RAM on their own. If you run Chrome with forty tabs plus Happy Wheels, you can stall a 4 GB machine without the physics being “too heavy”. Close the extra tabs. Steam’s packaged client may hold a Chromium instance in RAM even if you only wanted a small Flash-era game; that is one reason the store asks for 4 GB instead of 512 MB.

Intel Core i3 / AMD equivalent at 2.0 GHz is a low bar in 2026. The physics cost spikes on user levels with hundreds of joints, not on the original featured maps. If the editor crawls while you pan a huge layout, that is a changelog problem v1.98.2 tried to address (large-level optimization), not a reason to buy a new CPU before you test.

1024 MB storage is the Steam disk line. The HTML5 game is cached by the browser and is usually much smaller on disk. Leave a gigabyte free anyway if you plan to install Steam, the Valve client, and the game on a tiny Linux partition.

Linux versus Windows

Windows 10 64-bit is the named floor. 32-bit Windows 10 is not in the listing. Windows 11 is newer than the floor; it is not a separate row.

Linux names glibc 2.31 and Ubuntu 20.04. Distros that still ship an older glibc (very old Debian, some appliance boxes) are outside the line even if the CPU is fine. Proton is not mentioned on the store copy we have; the listing is a native Linux minimum, not a Windows-exe-through-Proton promise. If you are on Steam Deck, you are already on Valve’s Arch-based OS, which is well past glibc 2.31.

No macOS. Repeating that is cheaper than answering the same store-page question after someone gifts the app to a MacBook.

Browser on weaker machines

The Totaljerkface HTML5 client can run on hardware below the Steam table: a 2 GB Chromebook, a dusty office PC, a TV stick with a browser. Sometimes. WebGL must work. Ads add their own CPU tax. Mobile browsers are not the iOS (20 August 2015) or Android (25 January 2020) store builds; those were separate apps. Playing the desktop HTML5 game in a phone browser is a fan experiment, not a spec.

Test order that saves money:

  1. Open Totaljerkface on the PC you already own.
  2. Load a featured level and a large user level.
  3. Open the editor and pan. v1.98.2 and v1.98.3 exist specifically so large maps and long sessions hitch less.
  4. Only then compare the Steam minimums and Steam vs browser.

If the tab is already 2 FPS, a 21 September 2026 installer will not invent a faster iGPU. If the tab is fine, you likely meet Steam’s HD 4000 line.

English-only client, ads, and Family Sharing

Steam lists English interface and audio only. Specs do not change if you wanted another language; the SKU simply does not list one.

The Steam feature list includes ad-free play, Family Sharing, the level editor, and 5+ million community levels. Family Sharing still requires a machine that meets this table. Ads in the browser are a network and CPU cost that Steam is selling you out of, not a graphics preset.

Internet is required to browse community levels. Community reports say local play might work without a connection if Steam wraps the JS game; community levels still want a pipe. That is not a spec line, but it is why a LAN-only cafe PC can fail the real-world test even when the CPU is an i5.

Copy this table onto a sticky note if you are buying a used laptop for 21 September 2026: 64-bit Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.04-class Linux, 4 GB RAM, HD 4000-class WebGL, 1 GB free, no Mac. Then go play the browser build on that laptop tonight. The store page cannot bench itself.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Happy Wheels questions.

What are the Happy Wheels Steam minimum specs?

Intel Core i3 or AMD equivalent at 2.0 GHz, 4096 MB RAM, a WebGL / DirectX 11 GPU (Intel HD 4000 or better), and 1024 MB storage. Windows 10 64-bit also lists DirectX 11. Linux names glibc 2.31 / Ubuntu 20.04.

Does Happy Wheels on Steam support macOS?

No. The store does not list a Mac SKU. Use the HTML5 browser game on Totaljerkface, or a Windows/Linux machine that meets the table. Steam Deck is marked Playable.

Can the browser game run below the Steam minimums?

Often, if WebGL works. Totaljerkface does not publish a matching PC box. Test the tab before you buy hardware for the 21 September 2026 Steam edition.

Is Intel HD 4000 really enough?

It is the named GPU floor for WebGL / DirectX 11. Huge editor maps and ad-heavy browser sessions can still chug. v1.98.1 also fixed a crash path when WebGL2 was missing — see the changelog.

How much disk space does Happy Wheels need?

Steam lists 1024 MB. The browser client is cached by your browser and is usually smaller. Leave a gigabyte free if you also install the Steam program itself.

Is Steam Deck above the minimum?

Yes on raw APU power. Valve marks the game Playable, not Verified. Read controller setup for pad expectations on the handheld.
