Happy Wheels Guides Hub
Play free in the browser now, learn the keyboard, and prepare for the 21 September 2026 Steam edition.
Happy Wheels is still a browser game you can open today. Jim Bonacci and Fancy Force first shipped the ragdoll physics toy on 4 June 2010, then moved it to HTML5 and JavaScript on 28 December 2020. The live build stays free, with ads, at Totaljerkface. A Steam edition (app 4705510) is scheduled for 21 September 2026. It is not out yet. This hub maps every tutorial on the wiki: how to start, how to drive, how to finish a user level, how to build one, and how the upcoming client differs from the site you already use.
Happy Wheels is single-player. Extra bodies on a bike, a moped, a sleigh, or a shopping cart are still one player. The skill is reading the map, leaning the vehicle, and knowing when a wreck is a fail versus a token route.
First hour in the browser
If you have never crossed a finish line, start with the first-hour checklist. That page sends you to Totaljerkface, a featured level, and a first vehicle. Segway Guy and Wheelchair Guy are the two recommendations: one jumps, one fires a jet. The same guide explains finish-line wins versus token collection, what a destroyed head or torso actually does, and why a quick restart beats a five-minute crawl.
Steam is upcoming. Play the browser now so the keyboard is already in your hands on 21 September 2026.
Keyboard before excuses
Most failed featured levels are input problems. Open the keyboard map before you blame the sawblades. Default keys are Up to accelerate, Down to brake or reverse, Left and Right to lean, Z to eject, and Space, Shift, and Ctrl for character specials. After you leave the vehicle, Up straightens, Down curls, and Space grabs. Steam advertises partial controller support. Bindings are newly added; check Options after launch and treat the keyboard as canonical until you have seen the in-game list.
Finish the level that is actually there
User maps lie with their thumbnails. Survival tactics covers speed versus staying intact, leaning on jumps, ejecting on purpose, token routes, forced characters, bleeding out, and the heart-camera that follows a destroyed torso. Head or torso destruction usually fails a finish-line win. Secondary characters can still collect tokens. Read the level description twice.
When you want a gentler first vehicle, leave this hub for the vehicle ranking after you know what the map is asking.
Build after you can finish one map
The user-level workshop documents tools 1 through 8: select, shape, poly, art, joint, special, text, and trigger. Press T to test. The stage is 20000 by 10000, with a shape budget around 900. Steam advertises the same editor feature set. If you are forcing a late roster vehicle, read the full character roster so you do not ship a map nobody can start.
Pick a platform without guessing
The platform comparison tables browser free with ads versus Steam paid with no published price, plus controller support, Windows and Linux with no macOS listed, Steam Deck Playable, English only, Family Sharing, more than five million user levels, account sharing, and internet for community maps. Wishlist the Steam store page if you want the ad-free build later. Launch timing sits on the Steam launch notes. The official Discord is the live player channel.
Browse maps, then judge the toy
Featured PLAY is Jim’s shortlist. The rest of the five-million-plus pile lives in the community Level Browser: sort by most recent, most played, or highest rated, load a friend’s ID or URL, and copy a share link. After a few honest attempts, the 2026 still-good verdict covers gore, YouTube fame, iOS Metacritic 73, and why Steam is an upcoming paid client with no published price rather than a new campaign.
Use one guide per session. Finish a featured level, then open the next article that matches the thing that just killed you: a key, a token, a forced character, or a platform question. Happy Wheels rewards a short practice loop more than a long tab of theory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Happy Wheels questions.
Which Happy Wheels guide should I open first?
New players should start with the first-hour checklist, then keep the keyboard map open until lean and eject are automatic.
Is the Steam edition covered in these guides?
Yes. Steam is scheduled for 21 September 2026 and is not out yet. Use the platform comparison and the Steam launch notes while you keep playing the free browser build.
Where do character comparisons live?
Vehicle pages sit under the full character roster. Rankings sit on the vehicle ranking. Guides here teach inputs and win conditions, not every special in isolation.
Do I need an account to follow these tutorials?
No. You can play featured levels as a guest at [Totaljerkface](https://totaljerkface.com/). An account helps if you want to save progress and later share it with the Steam client.
Is this wiki the same as the game?
No. This is a fan wiki. Play the game on Totaljerkface, wishlist Steam on the official store, and use [Discord](https://discord.gg/happywheels) for live discussion.
Where do I find user levels, and is the game still worth it?
Use the community Level Browser for sort, search, and load-by-ID. For gore, YouTube fame, and browser-versus-Steam value, read the 2026 still-good verdict.
