Getting Started with Happy Wheels
Open Totaljerkface, finish one featured level, and learn what a win actually is before Steam arrives on 21 September 2026.
Happy Wheels does not start with a campaign menu. Jim Bonacci and Fancy Force ship a browser toy: pick a character, pick a level, try not to come apart. The original game went live on 4 June 2010. The HTML5 and JavaScript port followed on 28 December 2020. You still play it free, with ads, at Totaljerkface. The Steam edition (app 4705510) is scheduled for 21 September 2026. It is not out yet. Learn in the browser so the keyboard is already yours when the ad-free client arrives.
This page is the first hour. After one featured clear, keep the default keyboard layout nearby and read how finish-line maps actually fail.
Open the live game
Go to Totaljerkface. That is the official host. Clones copy the ragdoll joke and usually break the editor or the account. Featured levels sit on the front of the site; they are the right first maps. Skip the five-million-level search box until you can lean over a gap without spinning out.
Happy Wheels is single-player. A child on a bike, a passenger on a moped, or elves on a sleigh are extra ragdolls, not a second human.
If a tab feels sluggish, check the desktop requirements before you assume the physics engine is broken. The browser build runs on ordinary desktops. Steam lists Windows and Linux later, with no macOS row on the store page.
Finish line versus tokens
Every level has a win rule. Many maps want you at a finish line with the main body still attached enough to count. Other maps want tokens. Some hide tokens in the description so the obvious flag is bait.
Head or torso destruction usually fails a finish-line win. That is why a wreck that still slides across the line can reject you. Token maps are kinder to secondary bodies. If Irresponsible Dad’s child, or another extra ragdoll, can still grab coins after the driver is gone, the run can still complete. Read the text under the level title. When you are unsure, play as if the finish line needs a living torso, then switch to token hunting only after you have seen the pickup icons.
First character: Segway Guy or Wheelchair Guy
Eleven characters exist. You do not need eleven on day one. Start with Segway Guy or Wheelchair Guy.
Segway Guy is the cleaner teacher. Space jumps. Shift and Ctrl change posture. The vehicle is short, the jump is honest, and you learn lean without a jet that can throw you into the ceiling. Featured parkour maps often assume that jump.
Wheelchair Guy is the other good first pick when the thumbnail shows a huge gap. Space fires the jet. Shift and Ctrl rotate it. You can fly, which also means you can overshoot. Use him when the map is a canyon, not when it is a tight hallway of spikes.
Leave Irresponsible Dad, Irresponsible Mom, and Moped Couple for later. Extra bodies are extra fail points on a finish-line map. The original four vehicles page is the next roster stop after one clean featured clear.
What death means, and when to restart
Limbs come off. That is not always a fail. A lost foot can still roll. A destroyed head or a destroyed torso is the usual fail for finish-line maps. If the camera snaps to a floating heart after the chest is gone, you are watching a corpse. Do not steer that heart toward the flag unless the level is a token hunt and another body is still alive.
Restart when the main torso or head is gone on a finish-line map, when you are sliding backward down a slope you already climbed, or when you ejected into a pit you cannot re-enter. Stay in the wreck when you still have a torso and a downhill path, when a token sits next to a body that still moves, or when Effective Shopper can re-grab the cart.
Z ejects. On day one, treat it as a last resort. Stay in the seat unless the seat is about to enter a crusher.
A first session that actually ends
- Open Totaljerkface in a desktop browser.
- Pick Segway Guy unless the featured thumbnail is a giant gap; then pick Wheelchair Guy.
- Play the top featured level once without restarting, just to see the trap.
- Restart and play it until you either finish or understand the win rule.
- If you cannot lean, open the default keyboard layout and practice Left and Right on a flat stretch.
- Stop after one clear or five honest attempts.
You do not need Steam for this loop. Steam is a paid, ad-free client with partial controller support and the same user-level catalog, scheduled for 21 September 2026. Price is not published. Compare it later on browser versus Steam client. Until that date, the browser is the real game.
Wishlist the Steam store page if you want the ad-free client later, and use Discord for live chat. Totaljerkface accounts are slated to be shared with Steam, so a login you create now is not wasted.
Your first real skill is not speed. It is knowing whether the map wants a body at a line or a pocket of tokens, and restarting the instant the torso is gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Happy Wheels questions.
Where do I play Happy Wheels right now?
Play free, with ads, at [Totaljerkface](https://totaljerkface.com/). The Steam edition is scheduled for 21 September 2026 and is not out yet.
Which character should I pick first?
Segway Guy for jumps and tight maps, Wheelchair Guy for long gaps. Details on both sit with the original four vehicles.
What counts as beating a level?
Either reach the finish line with a torso that still counts, or collect the tokens the author placed. Read the level text; how finish-line maps actually fail explains both rules.
Does dying always fail the level?
No. Lost limbs can still roll. A destroyed head or torso usually fails a finish-line win. Secondary bodies can still collect tokens.
Should I wait for Steam instead of playing the browser?
No. Learn in the browser today. Steam is a later, paid, ad-free client. Compare both on browser versus Steam client and check desktop requirements if a tab stutters.
